Same-day appointments may be available for urgent dental care, depending on our schedule and your situation. The best way to find out is to call us as early in the day as you can. Tell us what’s happening, such as severe tooth pain, a broken tooth, swelling or a lost crown, and we’ll work to arrange the soonest visit. If we can’t see you that day, we’ll help you find the next available option.

A dental emergency is any problem that causes severe pain, swelling, bleeding or damage to a tooth and shouldn’t wait. Common examples include a severe toothache, a broken or chipped tooth, a lost crown or filling, swelling in the gums or face, and a knockedout tooth. Some situations are less clear, like mild sensitivity or a small chip. If you’re unsure, call our emergency dental office and we’ll help you decide how urgent it is.

For most tooth pain, a dentist is the right choice, because an emergency room can usually help with pain but can’t treat the tooth itself. An emergency dentist can find the cause of a toothache, whether it’s a cavity, a cracked tooth or an infection, and recommend treatment. Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling that is spreading toward your neck or eye, a high fever with facial swelling, or a serious injury to your face or jaw.

For a broken or chipped tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water, save any pieces, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. For a lost crown or filling, keep the crown if you have it, avoid sticky or hard foods, and brush gently around the area. Don’t use household glue. Then call us as soon as possible so the tooth can be protected and repaired before the damage gets worse.

Swelling in the gums, jaw or face can be a sign of a dental infection, so don’t wait for it to go away on its own. Call our Houston dental office as soon as you notice it, including on Saturday and Sunday. A cold compress may help with comfort, but it isn’t a treatment. If the swelling is severe, spreading, or comes with trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room.

When you call, we’ll ask about your symptoms and when they started. At your visit, your dentist will examine the area, may take X-rays to see what’s happening below the surface, explain what’s going on, and discuss your treatment options. Please bring a photo ID, your insurance information if you have it, a list of your medications, and any crown, filling or tooth piece that came out. If you feel nervous, let us know and we’ll work to keep you comfortable.
