Gum Disease

Cosmetic Dentist in Houston, TX serving Sugar Land, Katy and Surrounding Communities

It has been suggested that nearly all adults in the United States will, at some point, experience gum disease. The most common form of gum disease is gingivitis, which is also the easiest to treat.

Symptoms of gingivitis may include:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed easily when brushing, flossing, or eating
  • Increased tooth sensitivity

These issues can often be treated by improving your daily oral hygiene routine and visiting our office for a professional tooth cleaning. In some instances, treating gingivitis may require an antiseptic or prescription mouthwash as well. One of our experienced Houston dentists will be able to help you determine if this step is necessary during your periodontal examination.

Periodontitis

When gingivitis is left untreated, periodontitis will be the result. This advanced form of gum disease may initially have symptoms similar to gingivitis, but can eventually produce others such as:

  • A chronic bad taste in the mouth
  • Foul breath that does not improve with brushing
  • Pus in between teeth
  • Gum recession or separation from teeth
  • Loose teeth or a shifting bite
  • Tooth loss
  • Bone necrosis

Periodontitis can be quite painful and result in significant functional and aesthetic damage to your smile. When left untreated it can cause serious systemic issues as well.

Periodontitis has been linked to complications with diabetes and pregnancy, and is known to increase the risk of heart disease, respiratory illness, and even dementia and Alzheimer’s. The only way to guard against gum disease causing systemic health problems is through prompt treatment from an experienced periodontist.
